Only three successful crosses from 63 attempts - Introducing Arsenal 'winger' Gervinho

Clyne Tackles Gervinho

The statistic may not shock many Arsenal fans who have grown increasingly frustrated with the Ivory Coast internationals performances this season

Arsenal fans reacted with tongue-in-cheek shock toward the news that Gervinho had scored the winning goal against Togo in the African Nations Cup on Tuesday night. The Arsenal forward bagged the goal late on in the fixture to earn tree points at the death for the Ivory Coast; and what a goal it was as well. If you haven’t seen it here it is; a delightful volley from an acute angle…

Who knew he had it in him right?

As you may well know he has been the subject of ridicule and disparagement this season from football pundits and Arsenal fans alike in particular after he missed an absolute sitter against Bradford City in the League Cup defeat at Valley Parade earlier in the season.

But a rather alarming stat has come to light in the last couple of days which certainly gives credence to the recent criticism aimed at Gervinho’s door. The statistic in question comes courtesy of WhoScored.com and relates to the Ivorian’s crossing ability:

Three crosses from 63!?!

That truly is an abysmal record for the former Lille man and that statistic itself could show just why Arsenal fans get so easily frustrated by the player when every time he attempts to find a player in the box he more often or not wastes his opportunities.

Wenger generally uses him as a wide-man but considering these truly horrendous stats surely if he is going to be utilised in the Arsenal team then playing out wide would seem not to suit him.

Just imagine if out of 63 shots only three of them found their way on target; you would have to be the worst striker in the world for those types of statistics.

What do you think of the stat? Can Gervinho play out wide for Arsenal?
