Arsenal trounced West Ham last night at the Emirates, running out 5-1 winners.
With Mikel Arteta out injured, and Abou Diaby rested after his recent run of games to preserve his fitness, last night saw a rare run out for Aaron Ramsey in the centre of Arsenal's midfield.
Of the 11 starts he has made for the Gunners in the Premier League and Champions League this season; he has played on the right wing five times and on the left once. It was just the fifth start for him in the centre, but his first since December 4, when Arsenal lost 3-1 to Olympiakos.
With him regularly criticised for his lacklustre performances on the right, it was a big chance for him last night to re-stake his claim in his most natural position, how did he get on?
It was an expertly efficient performance from the Welshman, completing more passes (123) than any player on the pitch, at an accuracy of 95 per cent. Two of those were categorised as key passes, and 53 per cent of the total were forward passes.
He also made a clearance off the line from Carlton Cole, and his three tackles were more than any other midfielder on the pitch, with the exception of West Ham's Mark Noble (five).
That's a statistical perspective, but what did fans make of the much-derided 22-year-old's showing? We took to Twitter to find out...
@a20awk: Ramsey was excellent in his preferred position. Showed a great range of passing and had a real go. Goal line clearance was vital.
@goalcain: Ramsey and Wilshere works. Does that mean we don't have to worry without Arteta?
@kzgunner: After seeing Ramsey dispossessed so many times in games I'd never imagined he'd be a good deep lying midfielder for
#AFC! Take a bow son
@tobysharpeafc: Great to see Ramsey playing centrally, looked class tonight.
@sanketgooner: Special mention to Aaron Ramsey who played in the Arteta role and had an exceptional game.
@joelock91: Ramsey played well tonight in his natural position... Says it all Wenger
@mr_9iceman: Ramsey did great 2day, he just need 2 believe more in himself
@arsenalviewer: Ramsey was superb tonight. I think he's been told to stop the silly flicks and do what he does best.
@gooner_opinion: thought ramsey looked a lot more comfortable and suited in a deeper role, him an wilshere seemed to communicate well
@poonaloon: Ramsey was superb today. What a difference it makes being played in position. Top talent, top attitude, very pleased for him.
@antibarca2011: Aaron Ramsey played awesome tonight, why? He played in the middle of the freaking pitch instead of out wide on the wings. Bossed it.
What did you make of Ramsey's performance?
