Manchester United should make Marc-Andre ter Stegen their goalkeeper target

David De Gea Spain

If rumours are to be believed, Alex Ferguson is ready to move David De Gea on this summer. If that is the case, then United should look no further than Ter Stegen to replace the young Spaniard.

Having seemingly run out of patience with David De Gea, it would perhaps be unexpected if Alex Ferguson was to spend big money on another young keeper to replace him.

As such, more established names like Manuel Neuer have been linked with a summer move to Manchester United, based on the assumption Pep Guardiola might be keen to sign Victor Valdes for his new club Bayern Munich.

However there is a plethora of excellent young German keepers around at the moment, and of all of them Marc-Andre ter Stegen looks like he could be really special. Despite only being 20, he is an established name in the Bundesliga, having enjoyed a remarkable season last year to help Borussia Monchengladbach finish an unlikely fourth.

His first game of that season came against Neuer and Bayern Munich, when Ter Stegen outshone his illustrious counterpart as Monchengladbach won 1-0. His best performance this season also came against Bayern Munich, when he produced a string of great saves to earn a 1-1 draw against the runaway league leaders.

Whilst Ter Stegen is two years younger than De Gea, he has a very different style of goalkeeping to the Spaniard and it is one that could be more suited to the Premier League.

De Gea's outstanding shot stopping abilities are sometimes let down by uncertainty when dealing with balls into the box. Ter Stegen lacks no confidence in that area, and would be a far more commanding presence in United's back five.

In choosing De Gea Alex Ferguson was clearly hoping to sign a keeper who could become a fixture at the club for many years, and even if he feels he made a mistake with the Spaniard, the idea behind the signing is still a good one.

Ter Stegen has the ability to become a leading European goalkeeper, and could well challenge Manuel Neuer for the German number one spot at some stage; United should make him their number one target if they do sell De Gea.
