Are Chelsea losing their appeal?

Chelsea have been snubbed by an average striker from Ligue 1 in France, does it show they are losing their pulling power?

Lyon striker Bafetimbi Gomis has confirmed there was interest in signing him from Chelsea but he has snubbed the West London club and decided to commit his future to the French giants.

The club’s president has confirmed that Lyon have received several offers for the player this January, with one expected to be from Chelsea before they signed Demba Ba from Newcastle United.

Considering Gomis is hardly a prolific striker compared to some of the other top European targets at the moment, could it be an early indication that Chelsea are losing their pulling power in a few European markets.

The financial muscle of Manchester City, Malaga, Paris Saint-Germain and several other clubs across Europe now means that Chelsea have regular competition to sign the best players.

They are expected to miss out on Falcao this summer, which would be another massive blow to the West London club.

The managerial situation has not helped things, as players must be reluctant to join Chelsea without a guarantee that a coach is going to be there for any period of time.

Players will also fear the way that Roman Abramovich behaves as the owner of the club. The Russian has frequently demanded the arrival of key players which can threaten the position of individuals in the side.

There is a clear demand for success from the Russian and even the club legend status of Frank Lampard isn’t enough for Abramovich to force the club to keep one of their most experienced players signed on.

Have a bad season, and you’ll be out of the side seems to be the message at the moment, which isn’t exactly appealing if you’re trying to make a name for yourself in the football world.

If Chelsea are getting to a point where they cannot attract average signings to join the club then it merely increases the pressure on the entire side and the infrastructure which could prompt even more irrational decisions from the owner.

It’s important to point out that Lyon haven’t been awkward at any stage. They have put every offer to Gomis but he has turned down every one. If one of those was from Chelsea, then their image and appeal could be fading.

Do you think Chelsea should be worried about the calibre of players they can attract?
