AC Milan chasing Didier Drogba ahead of Barca clash

AC Milan manager Massimiliano Allegri has been singing the praises of former Chelsea striker Didier Drogba, in what could be perceived as a public relations exercise to lure the Ivorian to the San Siro.

Speculation over the 34-year-old’s future has caught the attention of a number of Europe’s top clubs after a slew reports the former Blues man is unsettled at Shanghai Shenhua where he moved last summer after winning the Champion’s League with Chelsea.

He has spent little over 6 months in China and is reportedly eyeing a move back to Europe, and is said to be trying to negotiate a release from his lucrative contract.

AC Milan, battled by Juventus, are the favourites to secure his services.

“Champions of his calibre are very welcome,” said Allegri.

“Galliani will know if the deal is feasible."

The club’s vice-president Adriano Galliani is the man tasked with convincing the striker that the tail end of his career is better spent in Milan than Shanghai. Drogba is currently away on international duty with the Ivory Coast national team at the African Cup of Nations.

The coach continued,

“A player like Drogba would certainly improve both the technical level and self-esteem of the team. We'll see what the club are able to do, otherwise we'll carry on as we are, looking to have a good second half of the season because that is our objective.”

AC Milan finished 2nd in Serie A last season but currently sit in 6th place in the league table, 14 points behind leaders Juventus. The coach will certainly be considering the morale of his squad in this transfer window, along with the concerns of the club’s supporters.

He mentioned the team’s self-esteem, which, although results have improved in the last few weeks, is still suffering from a poor start to the season. AC Milan have won 5 of their last 7 matches in the Italian top tier but face the toughest of challenges in the Champion’s League.

They face Barcelona in the knockout rounds next months and will need to boost their chances of qualifying for the Champion’s League next season – a signing of immense quality like Drogba could be just what the doctor ordered.
