Five potential destinations for Barcelona keeper Victor Valdes

AC Milan

Could Liverpool or Manchester United be among the destinations for Victor Valdes if he leaves Barcelona?

Victor Valdes has announced his intention to leave Barcelona at the end of his current contract in 2014. The Spaniard has been the number one choice at the Nou Camp since fighting off the challenge of top talent such as Rustu Recber, Pepe Reina and Robert Enke. Fitting in with the Barca style of football he has been an ever present for over a decade but he now seems ready for a new challenge. His current deal, as previously stated, runs until the summer of 2014 so he is free to leave on a free transfer at that point however Barcelona may look to cash in on the Spaniard before losing him on a free.

He has spoken of a desire to perhaps play abroad so where exactly could he go?

Bayern Munich

The team with which Valdes is being most publically linked is Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich for one very obvious reason; Pep Guardiola. His former coach at Barca knows him very well and is reportedly keen to bring him to the Allianz to act as the blueprint for transferring his Catalan philosophy to Bavaria.

AC Milan

AC Milan are readying themselves for the exit of their stalwart keeper as well as Christian Abbiati, the 35-year old 15-year Rossoneri veteran, is giving serious thought to ending his career. Valdes would be the perfect replacement for a club struggling to lure big name players in recent seasons; in fact they have become more accustomed to seeing them leave. The acquisition of Valdes would be a huge boost for the club.

Manchester United

This depends on whether rumours that Barca see current Old Trafford incumbent David De Gea as a potentially perfect Valdes replacement are indeed true. He certainly has the distribution to follow in his footsteps and if both teams agree a swap deal could be perfect business for both clubs.

Pepe Reina lost the battle for Barcelona’s number one spot to Valdes when they were team-mates in Catalonia and there is talk that Valdes could be an Anfield target as Reina starts to lose some of the capabilities that once made him potentially the Premier League’s best stopper. Rodgers would certainly not say no to a player of Valdes’s attributes in his team but a lack of Champions League football could swing the pendulum away from Liverpool.

This again depends on the future of their current number one stopper. While there is little talk of an incoming retirement announcement from Gianluigi Buffon the 35-year-old would certainly have had the thought cross his mind. While of course a top keeper, one of the best of his generation, he is certainly starting to show signs of deterioration and retirement or not the Old Lady may see Valdes as a perfect opportunity to replace Buffon.

Where do you think Victor Valdes will end up?
