The Daily Express has reported that Arsenal have made a £4 million bid for Florian Thauvin from Bastia, but why?
It’s been well publicised that Arsene Wenger is looking to strengthen Arsenal with singings in the transfer market but their reported approach for Florian Thauvin doesn’t make much sense.
The midfield is one of the most covered areas for the Gunners at the moment with the likes of Jack Wilshere and Aaron Ramsey having signed long-term deals to compliment the more experience players.
What makes it more odd is the fact that Thauvin is an attacking midfield player and his record for Bastia this season has been poor; three goals in 17 appearances.
He doesn’t seem to be the sort of player who is going to get into the side ahead of Mikel Arteta or Santi Cazorla so the only sense in signing him would be to provide cover.
The Express claims that a French paper Nice Matin has stated that Arsenal have bid double what Newcastle United are reported to have bid for the player.
Arsene Wenger does like to invest in youthful players and it fits in with the club’s transfer policy of buying young but it seems to be a case of putting two and two together and coming up with five.
You also need to look at the fact that Wenger rarely does any business in the January transfer window and now that Theo Walcott has committed to the club, he doesn’t need to go and look for another attacking player.
The highest profile arrival at the club over the winter in the last five years was signing Andrey Arshavin from Zenit in a deal worth £10 million.
The reports are also suggesting that Bastia do not want to sell Thauvin until the end of the season which seems to make sense as he is clearly a valued and regular performer for their first team.
Arsenal need players in other areas of their side before they think about going to get another midfield genius.
There is also plenty of talk about Arsenal getting another forward in and maybe adding to their defence to cover the second half of the season. It just seems to be a bit of a lottery as to which reports are accurate and which are fabricated.
Arsenal fans! Anything in this? Do you even need him?
