Barcelona keeper Victor Valdes wants to leave Barca for a new challenge. Bayern Munich are favourites to sign him. Barca reportedly want Manchester United stopper David De Gea to replace him. Leaving Manuel Neuer to Manchester United the obvious solution.
The news that Barcelona’ s long serving goalkeeper Victor Valdes has confirmed his desire to vacate the Catalan club in 2014 has caused a big stir in Europe. Considered one of Europe’s best goalkeepers he has been linked with several clubs across the continent. He himself stated his desire to play abroad and try a fresh challenge in his career so inevitably he has been linked with clubs in the Premier League and Serie A but the team being most strongly linked with his signature is Bayern Munich.
The Bavarian club have secured the services of Pep Guardiola for the start of next season beating the likes of Chelsea and AC Milan to his much coveted managerial expertise. With Valdes available and Guardiola at the helm of a new club the rumours make sense; considering the blueprint to Barca’s football under Guardiola relied heavily on the Valdes style of goalkeeping.
However Bayern Munich already have a world-class keeper between the sticks who would certainly have something to say about this potential transfer. In fact some would even argue that Manuel Neuer is indeed the world’s best goalkeeper; an argument that is difficult to counter.
However when new managers come in with different philosophies sometimes things change and Guardiola may indeed opt for his old talisman and give Neuer his notice. If so you can be sure that there will be plenty of clubs getting in touch with his representatives. The likes of Juventus and AC Milan for instances will be hunting for new keepers this summer; as the careers of Gianluigi Buffon and Christian Abiatti come toward an end.
However you can bet that Premier League teams will also come calling; in particular Manchester United. David de Gea is currently the number one choice but there have been whispers for a while now that Sir Alex is changing his mind on his talents. With Barcelona rumoured to be considering De Gea as Valdes’ replacement it could complete a goalkeeper merry-go-round if United were to bring in Neuer. Anyone who saw the glow on Ferguson’s face when he spoke of Neuer’s superb first leg performance for Schalke 04 in the Champions League semi-final of 2011 will realise the admiration he has for the stopper:
"In my time at United, it is probably the finest display of goalkeeping against us. I am sure there have been other feats but tonight I saw a very good one. There was a frustration towards the end of the first-half when Neuer made another save from Ryan. When that move broke down our players started walking back and I sensed a bit of frustration. We had to correct that at half-time. But the thing that broke the camel's back was Javier Hernandez's goal being chalked off. That took away the frustration of the players because they knew they could actually beat the guy even if it was not easy."
So could Valdes’ exit start a merry-go-round of goalkeeping transfers?
