Total branch closures now amounts to 160 shops, promotions also ended across targeted branches.

Those looking to rent a videogame to kill time as they're snowed in may have to travel far to find an open Blockbuster, as the company has announced plans to close more branches.

Administrator Deloite announced the plans to close an additional 129 branches on top of the 31 stores that had already been served their notice.

"Having reviewed the portfolio with management, the store closure plan is an inevitable consequence of having to restructure the Company to a profitable core which is capable of being sold," explained Lee Manning, Joint Administrator, alongside Matthew David Smith and Neville Kahn.

"We would like to thank the Company’s employees for their support and professionalism during this difficult time. We are also grateful to the customers for their continued support."

It was confirmed that the staff at braches targeted for closure will be made redundant, but that the process would be immediate and that a scheme has been launched to help employees find new jobs.

The troubled retailer announced that it would be calling in administrators the same week as HMV.

Recently saved videogames specialist retailer Game announced plans to snap up HMV branches in regions it lacks a presence, though the interest of HMV Canada-owner Hilco has yet to be revealed.
