Arsenal suffered a disappointing defeat at Stamford Bridge in the snow this weekend, going down 2-1.
Who got the blame for Arsenal's defeat to Chelsea?
Apart from the referee, failing to whistle for Ramires' challenge on Francis Coquelin which led to Juan Mata's goal, it was Bacary Sagna who took a large portion of the flak.
He was caught ball-watching in the lead up to Mata's goal, failing to recover to get goalside of the Spaniard, and was nowhere to be seen when Ramires went clean through before he won what proved to be the game-deciding penalty.
His passing wasn't up to much either in the first half, although he did improve as the game went on; it was hard for him to get worse.
Sagna is a very important part of Arsenal's defence, but not when he is playing as he did yesterday. He has been linked with a summer move away from the club; and there were fans crying out mid-game for fellow right-back Carl Jenkinson.
His 75 per cent pass completion was the lowest of any defender on the pitch, but there were positives; he made more tackles (six) than any Arsenal player; with only Chelsea's Ramires (nine) making more. Perhaps he wasn't as bad as all that then?
Was there a more pressing reason why Sagna failed to perform? Was it to do with Theo Walcott playing on the right wing, focusing on attack and giving little in terms of defensive protection?
With Carl Jenkinson in need of games and Arsenal meeting West Ham in midweek it may not be a bad idea for Wenger to rotate his full-backs and give the Englishman another run out.
Here are the tweets from fans reacting to Sagna's performance...
@paddythelamb: Sagna is terrible. Doesn't even care. Please give Jenkinson a chance.
@padraiggoggin: For someone who was the most consistent member of
#Afc's defence for years, Sagna is starting to look like his best days are behind him.
@johanneswetter: Also wondering what the F has happened to Sagna?! He is awful right now, think it's about time to bring Jenko back in action
@mylesburrell: Sagna showed today that he's a shadow of the player he used to be.
@smadden85: Does Sagna not remember hes playing right back. Hes no where to be found defensively at the minute
@yinkaroajide: We need to start the Jenks experiment just like Coquelin.. Sagna needs to sit on the beanch and watch him do his thang.
@kevin_endy: I think sagna's performance 2day says it all...he simply wants out.
@ryanbiddiss: game was lost in 20mins. terrible first half. sagna looks like hes still got a broken leg hes playin that bad at the moment
What did you make of Sagna's showing? Should Jenkinson be given an opportunity?
