Seven years at the helm of Blizzard's flagship loot-em-up sees Jay Wilson depart.
The face of Diablo III's development, director Jay Wilson, has announced he intends to depart the project to pursue other opportunities within Blizzard.
Speaking to fans via the BattleNet forums, the director described his experience of working on the hotly anticipated action-RPG as one of the most rewarding of his life.
"I've reached a point creatively where I'm looking forward to working on something new," Mr Wilson explained.
"The powers that be at Blizzard have been gracious enough to give me that opportunity."
While he will no longer be working on Diablo III within the next few weeks, the former-director assured fans that he would be migrating to a new project within the company.
However, gamers shouldn't necessarily expect more of the same from whoever comes in to replace him, as Mr Wilson suggested that the company could be looking to bring in some new outside talent.
"You shouldn't be surprised if you see a job posting for a game director on Diablo III, as we want to make sure we explore every opportunity to find the best possible leadership for the project," he said.
"We're looking forward to finding this person and hearing what kind of fresh ideas they can bring to the table."
While gushing with affection for the game's community, the relationship was not always so fruitful and at times became fractious over issues such as art-direction and certain game design choices.
