Spurs have been given the green light in their pursuit of Younes Belhanda from Montpellier, is he the signing they need?
Tottenham Hotspur have been encouraged to start negotiations for attacking midfielder Younes Belhanda by Montpellier’s owner Louis Nicollin. They should listen carefully as he's a player who can drastically improve the side.
Spurs have been linked with the £15 million rated player since the start of January and the comments from Nicollin suggest that Montpellier would welcome a deal if Spurs want to sit down and discuss one.
“Tottenham's interest? There has been nothing official as yet, but I would like there to be. If a good offer arrives, he will leave. We can live without him and he can live without us,” Nicollin told L’Equipe.
So why should Tottenham be interested in this player?
Well, his strike rate for a midfielder is absolutely superb with 53 goals in 114 games for Montpellier and nine goals in 17 games for Morocco.
These are the sort of figures that Premier League sides can only dream of in terms of attacking midfielders. He also fills a hole in the Spurs side which Andre Villas-Boas will be looking to cover.
Spurs are also perfectly setup to compliment the way that Belhanda likes to play football. They have solid defensive midfielders that will allow him to get forward and give in to all of his attacking instincts.
The 22-year-old can also compliment the strikers at the club very well because his final balls in the last third of the pitch are superb. This is positive for Jermain Defoe in particular who seems to like the ball played into his feet.
His pace and movement also seems to compliment other key attacking players at the club such as Gareth Bale and Moussa Dembele. He is good enough to drag opposition players out of position and create space for these stars to exploit.
It is the fee which seems to have stopped a potential move for the player to go and play for Fenerbahce in Turkey. Belhanda agreed terms with the Turkish club but they refused to pay Montpellier’s valuation.
Hence, the deal seems to have fallen through and with the player interested in a move to England, it seems just a matter of time if Spurs are seriously interested in signing him.
He does seem like an AVB sort of player; small, quick, technically good, hungry, fit. However, Spurs’ Portuguese coach has always been very shrewd with his business dealings so it will be interesting to see how this saga unfolds.
