Swansea appear to have been snubbed by a Bolton Wanderers defender and it’s difficult to work out why.
Marcus Alonso will not be joining Swansea City despite reports suggesting Michael Laudrup wants the Spaniard as a permanent left back.
Neil Taylor’s broken ankle has forced Swansea into seeking additional cover at left back but for some bizarre reason, Alonso has said he’s not interested in any move to the Premier League side.
Alonso originally signed for Bolton in 2010 from Real Madrid and his contract expires this summer which means the club have to sell him now or risk him walking away for free.
He seems very happy at Bolton which is respectable but he is being offered the chance to play Premier League, top flight English football.
He may want to show some faith to Bolton and go up with them in a successful promotion campaign but that seems a massive risk considering Bolton are currently 16th in the table and only have a long shot at a play off spot.
Swansea remain a slick pass and move side despite the fact the emphasis within the team now seems to be to get the ball forward faster.
Alonso has the perfect game to come in and be effective at Swansea because he likes to bomb forward and join up with the attacks and he is solid enough defensively to cope well under pressure.
“My head is in Bolton and I just want to get back with Bolton to the Premier League - I am happy now. The manager is doing a great job and, as I said, if we win two or three games, we will get our confidence back and the fans back,” Alonso told the Bolton News.
It’s all very strange. If there has been interest, official interest from Swansea and if a deal was put before Alonso, how could he possibly turn it down with Bolton where they are in terms of Premier League promotion hopes.
There is an outside chance that it could be a financial decision on the part of the player, not wanting to risk the security he has at Bolton for a deal which may have various bonuses and stipulations written into it at the Swans.
