Chelsea have been offered hope in their pursuit of Falcao from an unlikely source, Atletico Madrid.
Atletico Madrid have been determined to hang onto Falcao, being sure to insist the Colombian striker stays with them for now.
As January passes the midway point, that facade is beginning to slip, with manager Diego Simeone admitting the striker's exit is inevitable.
Former Argentina midfielder Simeone still wants and expects his star man to stay this January, but the summer is another matter.
In fact when discussing the summer transfer window, Simeone cut the air of a manager resigned to his club's fate.
He said: "We have to be realists, I don't like to lie to people. We don't know what can happen with Falcao, we have to make the most of him while we have him.
"Falcao is here, now, and he helps us to win. We hope that he can stay. If that's not the case, I wish him good luck."
That sounds very much to as us as though Falcao has the blessing of Atletico to leave, certainly his manager, who knows he cannot stand in his way for much longer from a lucrative move.
Atletico have already begun lining up replacements, with Manchester United's Javier Hernandez high on their list.
Chelsea will face competition from PSG, Real Madrid and Manchester City for the freescoring forward's signature.
Should Chelsea make a big bid for Falcao now?
