Double Fine's The Cave given release date

The Cave

New adventure game from lauded veterans to see widespread digital release this month.

Sega has announced the launch details of The Cave, a result of its partnership with critically acclaimed developer Double Fine Productions.

Representing the reunion of lauded industry veteran Ron Gilbert, of Monkey Island and Manic Mansion fame, with former collaborator and celebrated developer Tim Schafer, The Cave will hit North American and European shores on January 22nd and 23rd respectively.

Released on the PlayStation Network, Xbox Live Arcade and to PCs via Steam, the £9.99 title will allow gamers to form teams of three adventurers, likely with unique and interesting traits, who descend into a mysterious cave.

"The concept of The Cave has been bouncing around in my head for many, many years, and then the little voices that tell me to do things said it was time to make the game," enthused Ron Gilbert.

"I'm thrilled to be working with amazingly talented folks at Double Fine and ecstatic that the team at Sega believes in adventure games and quirky ideas."

The creative duo recently found success with crowd-funding website Kickstarter, where their proposed adventure game garnered nearly 90,000 backers and over USD3 million (£1.8 million) – well over their stated goal of USD400,000 (£249,000).

During an interview with RockPaperShotgun, Mr Schafer stressed that Double Fine had no idea how successful its Kickstarter gambit would be.

"We were just doing a little experiment, and it was just so big!" he commented, adding: "I think it just means there’s another great option for people."

The developer explained that traditional routes to publishing games were often financially bleak, especially for small to medium sized companies, but that crowd-funding was a new and exciting possibility.
