3. 1942 - Actress Carole Lombard, the wife of actor Clark Gable, dies in a plane crash

4. 1945 - Adolf Hitler and his companion, Eva Braun, takes to his underground bunker, where he remains for 105 days until he commits suicide

5. 1974 - Kate Moss is born

6. 1979 - The Shah of Iran flees into exile following months of increasingly violent protests against his regime

7. 1980 - Paul McCartney is jailed in Tokyo for possession of a half pound of marijuana. He spends ten days behind bars before being kicked-out of the country by Japanese authorities.

8. 1982 - Britain and the Vatican resume full diplomatic relations after a break of over 400 years.

9. 2001 - Laurent Kabila, president of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, is assassinated

10. 2003 - Space Shuttle Columbia launches on its final mission

11.  2009 - It is announced that Bank Of America will receive $20bn in fresh US government aid and $118bn worth of guarantees against bad assets
