The former Coventry City, Southampton, Celtic and Middlesbrough gaffer will take over from Craig Levein this week and there has been a mixed reaction to the news.
Scotland seem set to appoint Gordon Strachan as their new national coach within the next week as a replacement for Craig Levein ; who was relieved of his duties on the 5th November last year after a poor stint in charge.
Strachan struggled in his last managerial role at Middlesbrough but prior to that the former Aberdeen winger performed wonders at unfancied sides such as Coventry City and Southampton in the Premier League and with Celtic in Scotland.
In recent years he has become better known for his punditry on ITV and becoming a cult internet viral icon for his often humorous post-match press conferences.
While many are pleased to see a man with 50 international caps and such experience at managing at club level others are disappointed to not see the role going to a younger manager who might instil a new philosophy to the Scottish game; in short some feel the appointment of Strachan is a backward step.
Time will tell whether Strachan can salvage some pride from their so far disastrous World Cup Qualifying campaign while also avoiding dropping out of the world’s top 75 in FIFA’s World Rankings (currently they are 72nd; behind Cape Verde, Uzbekistan and Sierra Leone).
Here is what Scottish fans had to say about the appointment on Twitter…
Gordon Strachan to be named Scotland manager. Definitely the type of forward thinking visionary you would want as national team coach. #Joke— Mark Surridge (@Goof_E_Fresh) January 15, 2013
Know I'll be in a minority but I wish Strachan well, never worked out with us but he was man enough to hold his hands up & walk without ££— Chris Pearson (@Boro_Brick_Road) January 15, 2013
So Strachan is set to be announced as Scotland manager.Even if he ends up as another failure. At least his interviews will be hilarious!— Richard Hodge (@HodgieLFC) January 15, 2013
Looking forward to Strachan being the new Scotland boss, will hopefully give the youth more of a chance in the first team— Bradley Abbott (@bradleyabbott_) January 15, 2013
Quite happy with strachan. Hopefully have a go now instead of trailing all over Europe to watch a team with no strikers— Jamie Campbell (@1geordiemorton) January 15, 2013
Strachan named new Scotland manager. SFA once again taking the easiest and most predictable choice #lazy— Will Little (@StandardWill) January 15, 2013
What we lack is a bit of character, a touch of madness, and loads of swagger, that's exactly what Strachan will bring.— roscobosco (@roscobosco_PSN) January 15, 2013
Do you think Strachan is a good appointment?
