Manchester United were linked with Swiss midfielder Granit Xhaka last season. A move may still not be out of the question.
The wonderfully named Granit Xhaka was part of the Basel side which helped eliminate Manchester United at the group stage of the Champions League back last season.
Along with midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri, he formed an exciting midfield partnership which drew the attentions of clubs across Europe.
Manchester United were linked with the star a year ago, when he was just 19. In the summer they were caught napping as Borussia Moenchengladbach brought him to the Bundesliga in a a cut-price £6 million deal.
Now it is being reported that after just six months in Germany, Xhaka wants to leave Moenchengladbach.
The claims are being made by Italian daily Corielle dello Sport, who have a vested interest as they are reporting Xhaka is a target for Rome club Lazio.
Xhaka is a defensive midfielder who is now 20, and has 12 international caps - with three goals, to his name.
He has made 12 appearances for Moenchengladbach this season, who are eighth in the Bundesliga, but CdS report he has failed to settle and is open to a move in the summer transfer window.
If true then Manchester United should really be back on alert for the midfielder. At the age of 20 he has immense experience already, of Champions League and international football, and has played in two different countries.
Most of all, unlike a Cheik Tiote or Lars Bender type, he would be available for under £10 million, filling a key gap in United's squad - they need a defensive midfielder to take the pressure off Michael Carrick.
The fee would allow United to invest in other targets such as a new winger or even the Robert Lewandowski deal which has been so widely reported.
It was a bit of a mystery why the Red Devils did not push a deal for Xhaka in the summer, but his willingness to move on already from Moenchengladbach gives them a second bite at the apple.
Should United go for Xhaka?
