Prior to the transfer window, Manchester United were very heavily linked with Porto winger James Rodriguez.
Through the months of November and December, not a day went by when Manchester United weren't in some way linked with sensational Porto winger James Rodriguez.
The Colombian has taken his level of performance to new heights this season, with eight goals and seven assists already. He has also been turning on the style in the Champions League; netting a crucial goal against PSG in the group stages.
Rodriguez likely remains on Manchester United's radar, but Sir Alex Ferguson's announcement that no new players will be brought in this January has put the brakes on any move.
Wilfried Zaha is considered an exception to the rule as United plan on loaning him back to Crystal Palace if a transfer deal is concluded.
The arrival of Rodriguez this month was only ever an option if United were to move Nani on, and Ferguson has elected to stick with the winger until the summer at least.
When they do go into the market, they will not be the only ones taking a look at the Porto man.
Italian news website 'calcionews24.com' report that reigning Serie A champions Juventus are determined to sign Rodriguez.
The Old Lady took a look at him in 2010, but failed to follow up their interest, and word from the club is that they are seriously regretting it.
Now he has proven his worth, Juventus want to launch a bid to sign him, but like United they don't plan on doing it until the summer. Juve’s director general Beppe Marotta announced this week he expects no major signings this month.
“The transfer window will close without any major signings. The January market is not offering important names for Juventus. We are looking around, evaluating, but in the meantime we want to recover those players who are absent with injury or participating at the African Cup of Nations.”
There isn't much chance of Porto looking to sell now either, midway through a season where they remain in Champions League contention, but when the summer comes around, United won't have it all their own way in their pursuit of the winger.
Which would be the best fit for Rodriguez? United or Juventus?
