Our Top 10 Players to Avoid this January

Reina And Liverpool Warm Up

Liverpool, West Ham, Manchester City men and a former Tottenham player feature, along with a famous ex-Manchester United treble winner.

Football365 ran a superb article with ten players that all clubs should avoid trying to sign this January. This led us to thinking, are there another 10 players out there, linked with top sides who would be better off left alone?

The F365 list reads; Guillaume Hoarau, Lee Camp, Yann M’Vila, David Villa, Salomon Kalou, Wesley Sneijder, Luciano Becchio, Franco Di Santo, Adrian Lopez, Loic Remy.

Here’s our top ten.

1) Pepe Reina

The Liverpool goalkeeper has been linked with a high profile move to Manchester United. He may have experience of having played in the Premier League before but it would be a bizarre decision for Sir Alex Ferguson to sign an inconsistent goalkeeper prone to the odd error.

2) Stewart Downing

A lot will be written over the coming days about how Downing has done remarkably well to force his way back into the Liverpool side. Don’t read too much into this. He’s only in the side because of the current injury to Jose Enrique. The reason to avoid him for any potential club is because he doesn’t seem to know whether he’s a left back or left winger at present.

3) Bafetimbi Gomis

Chelsea and Liverpool remain linked with the Lyon striker. He is one of the most high profile players at the French club which would mean a large fee and a large wage deal. He has a ratio of 11 goals in 20 games this season and there are other, much cheaper 1:2 strikers available.

4) Sebastian Fernandez

Sebastian Fernandez is a striker who has struggled to hold down a regular place at Malaga so far this season; he’s made three starts and six sub appearances for the club scoring no goals. It would be a gamble for linked clubs Norwich City and Southampton because of his lack of match fitness, the time it would take for him to settle in and the fact he can’t speak English.

5) Carlton Cole

Cole has thrived in the absence of Andy Carroll, which has led to rumours of a few clubs monitoring him. Norwich City and Reading are reportedly interested but a record of two goals in 19 games this season speaks for itself.

6) David Beckham

Beckham made his high profile departure from LA Galaxy before the start of the January window. He’s moved his family to London which has led to suggestions of a possible move to QPR or West Ham. For the amount of cash it would take to sign him, his lack of current match fitness will prevent him from having a major impact until at least around March.

7) Kim-Shin Wook

Not heard of him? He’s nearly two metres tall and reports would have us believe, he’s on the way to Everton. He’s six feet six inches tall so it seems he’d be used as a target man at Everton, contradicting some of the solid football they have played so far this season.

8) Willian

Willian has been heavily linked to Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea. Many will be familiar with him having watched him play against Chelsea in the Champions League where he’s scored one goal in six games. Spurs will have to spend a lot of cash to prise him away from Shakhtar where he scores once every seven games. Hardly prolific.

9) Luka Modric

A whole host of Premier League sides would be in for Modric who is struggling to settle at Real Madrid. However, there are plenty of similar players around, especially in the Bundesliga who would be available at a fraction of the cost considering Real paid over £30 million for the Croatian last summer.

10) Mario Balotelli

Love him or loathe him, Mario Balotelli is great for entertainment. However, as a potential striker he seems more trouble than he’s worth with the fireworks fiasco a perfect example as well as his recent training ‘fight’ with Roberto Mancini. He’d also be unwilling to take much less than the £170,000 per week he’s currently being paid.

Who would you have on this list? Why do you think we’re wrong?
