Could Arsenal do worse than bring in Malouda from Chelsea?

Should Arsenal consider a cheap cross-London deal for Chelsea winger Florent Malouda this January?

Thank us for reminding you, because we don't blame you if it slipped your mind; Florent Malouda is still a Chelsea player.

In name at least, but there is little chance he will be making any appearances this season, he has been forced to spend most of the campaign training with the under-21s.

He had been expected to clinch a move away from the club pretty sharply this January, but 15 days into the month it hasn't happened, he remains marooned at Stamford Bridge.

So here's a solution.

Across London, Arsenal are enduring a tricky season, currently sitting in sixth place in the Premier League.

The needs of their squad may dictate that Malouda would be a useful temporary solution, at least on a loan deal.

Let's look at Arsenal's wingers: Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain - fine. Theo Walcott - Not really a winger any more is he, Lukas Podolski - Is wide left really his best position, Andrei Arshavin - Never really been a winger now has he.

Beyond that the Gunners must look to their youth prospects, and while Serge Gnabry is an outstanding talent, Arsene Wenger appears reluctant to promote him to the first team on a regular basis just yet.

So Oxlade-Chamberlain is currently the only specialised winger in the squad, if you consider Walcott to be a converted striker presently.

Arsenal could certainly do with a stopgap, and Malouda on a loan deal would be just that. It would be just what the player needs too, he will likely jump at the chance to prove a point and put himself in the shop window for a summer move.

Don't think the club's rivalry and league position will prevent such a move. It hasn't in recent seasons.

The clubs got together the Ashley Cole - William Gallas swap in 2006, but perhaps far more poignantly, Chelsea loaned Arsenal Yossi Benayoun last season in similar circumstances.

Malouda would bring experience, talent and motivation to Arsenal, and for just a few months he could be an astute piece of business, if they want to take the gamble.
