Newcastle United have been highly linked with a move for the talented Dutch-Brazilian and with the news that Fabricio Coloccini is seeking a return to Argentina the deal could prove imminent. But should Chelsea take a look at the 25-year-old?
Reports emanated today that Newcastle United centre-back and captain Fabricio Coloccini was looking for a move away from St James Park. Apparently the player, who was compared to Bobby Moore earlier in the season by Toon boss Alan Pardew is hoping to secure a move back to Argentina for personal reasons; with San Lorenzo the favourites for the 30-year-old centre-back.
Losing a player who was included in last year’s Premier League team of the year would be a huge loss for The Magpies who are already reeling from the loss of Demba Ba and struggling dangerously near the relegation mark.
This news will see rumours of a replacement quickly gain momentum and the player who will undoubtedly be linked with filling this position will be FC Twente defender Douglas Teixeira. The 25-year-old talent has been one of the clubs and Eredivisie’s star performers for the past three seasons and his contract expires in the summer. In light of what is a clear desire to move Twente are reported to have openly invited offers for the player this month in order to cash in on the player who signed for the club from Brazilian side Joinville in 2007 (although bizarre circumstances in relation to his player rights make the deal slightly complicated).
With Newcastle United’s defensive situation moving into urgent territory they may have no choice but to avoid waiting on the player and moving in with a cash bid this transfer window or suffer with the minimal options that they currently have at their disposal.
But should any of Newcastle United’s Premier League rivals be looking to move in ahead of them for the player?
The simple answer is yes.
He turns 25 this week so is still at a ripe age for development but not too young so he is a dangerous starting option. In terms of ability other than Jan Vertonghen last season you would struggle to find a better centre-back playing in the Eredivisie. He is tall and exceptional in the air and add to that his athleticism and physical prowess he is perfect for the Premier League.
Chelsea could be a perfect destination for him. As Rafa Benitez continues to fancy David Luiz as a central-midfield option a new centre-back is a necessity at the club and Douglas could fit the bill. Despite being called up to the Dutch national team he is in essence a Brazilian so would find plenty of compatriots at Stamford Bridge.
In fact I would argue he is the one player whose potential is being greatly underestimated in this transfer window. If teams want to grab a fantastic bargain who has the potential to be a superb centre back undoubtedly this is your man.
Would you want your side to sign Douglas?
