Matt Targett has been in great form for the under-21's at Southampton this season and is reportedly a transfer target for Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal. Could they convince him to come to The Emirates?
Southampton FC have been getting pretty used to seeing their star protégés moving on to North London. When times were different and money was in short supply on the South Coast it became a necessity to sell their burgeoning hot prospects in order to keep the books balanced; in fact it was essential to keep the club afloat.
At least that was the case with the two most successful Southampton graduates. Gareth Bale and Theo Walcott were moved on to Tottenham and Arsenal respectively for fairly large nominal fees even if much of the cash was to spread out over a number of years (a decision that backfired in Gareth Bale’s case).
Then even when the club was in a slightly more stable financial position they still had to consider the long-term success of the club; in particular after the passing of the clubs saviour Markus Liebherr. Therefore an offer a year on of £12 million rising to £15 million for future England international Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was impossible to turn down.
So when Arsenal reportedly started sniffing around at promising left-back Luke Shaw you could understand any trepidation that Saints fans may have had about his imminent departure; he surely would have impressed in the 1-1 draw with The Gunners at St Marys where he was arguably Southampton’s best player.
Yet that now seems to be scrubbed away after Shaw agreed a new long-term contract with Nigel Adkins side that will put an end to the speculation for now. But according to some sources Arsenal will not look far for a replacement target; quite literally Targett because the player in mind is Southampton teenager Matt Targett.
The 17-year-old has been in scintillating form in the under-21 league and has caught the attention of Arsenal scouts with his technical ability. Considered a long-term back-up for Shaw in the Southampton first-team it appears Arsenal may convince him that his future lies away from the Solent.
Indeed this has happened before at Southampton. The main man then was Wayne Bridge but a young pretender called Ryan Ashford was also highly thought of by Glenn Hoddle and considered one for the future. In the end there was only room for one player and judging by the fact most of you will be going ‘who’ at the name Ryan Ashford you know who won out in the end. As for Ashford he tumbled down the football league and into non-league obscurity; despite possessing an abundance of talent.
Targett therefore may jump at the chance of a potential move to The Emirates and Southampton would struggle to keep hold of him after given the nod to Luke Shaw so predominantly this campaign.
Arsenal could be about to pull yet another Saints youngster away from the club.
Have you seen Matt Targett play? Is he good enough for Arsenal?
