Norwich targeting Hamburg midfielder

Norwich City are targeting Norwegian international Per Ciljan Skjelbred according to the morning papers. How can he help to improve the side?

Norwich have been linked with Per Ciljan Skjelbred, currently playing for Bundesliga side Hamburg.

If the reports in the morning papers are true then this could be a master striker from Norwich boss Chris Hughton because Norwich appear to be unrivalled for his services.

Skjelbred seemingly doesn’t like to move around too much having only ever played for Rosenborg and Hamburg so far in his career.

At 25-years-old he is likely to want to play more first team football than he currently is at Hamburg which is where Norwich can step in and poach him.

He would be a great signing for Norwich because he can play a type role in the middle of the pitch which Norwich are missing; sitting, picking passes and controlling the tempo of the side.

Norwich can sometimes be a little guilty of allowing their midfield to go too high up the pitch and this is something that Skjelbred can control.

He can allow the key players in the Norwich midfield to give into their attacking instincts without the side having to sacrifice the basic shape of the team every time they attack.

It’s also important to point out that Skjelbred has made 16 international appearances for Norway so he’s no stranger to pressure and playing on the biggest stage.

Physically, he is not the sort of player who is going to launch into tackles and break up opposition counter attacks but his experience means he can read the game well and play a Paul Scholes type role in terms of creativity and discipline.

If Norwich are interested, and it’s a big if considering some of the drivel doing the rumour rounds this January, they need to act quickly to sign him because a bidding war could erupt with other teams once his availability becomes open.

Newcastle United appear to be the only contenders to Norwich to sign him having already spoken with his representatives but he may prefer a choice to the canaries where he is much more likely to be a first choice player.

It would be a cracking deal for Norwich if they pull it off but watch this space.

Is Skjelbred good enough to play in the Premier League? Let us know what you think about these rumours.
