Jack Butland latest: Five clubs in the mix to sign Birmingham 'keeper

Team GB

Five Premier League clubs are thought to be battling for the transfer of Birmingham City goalkeeper. Who are they and why do they want him?

Jack Butland is creating quite a name for himself. He must be pretty good if Manchester United, Liverpool, Everton, Fulham and Southampton are all trying to snap him up for £6 million.

The Telegraph has reported that Fulham and Southampton are the leading candidates and apparently, the Saints have already had off the record talks with Birmingham over the 19-year-old.

The mania surrounding this shot stopper could be because of two things.

Firstly, and most likely is the fact that he is a very good goalkeeper, playing football at Championship level when he looks capable of much higher levels.

Secondly, there is the chance this story is being over egged more than a Mary Berry cake because of the reputation of English goalkeepers.

Joe Hart is the undoubted number one and this lad is seemingly the back up or the player who is going to make Hart sweat over the next few years.

Realistically, out of the five clubs that have been linked with him, Liverpool, Fulham or Southampton look the most likely destinations considering United have two world class goalkeepers and Everton possess an undoubted number one in Tim Howard.

Therefore, the natural choice out of the three would be Liverpool with Pepe Reina being linked with a move away from the club and back to Spain, seemingly every other day.

If that doesn’t come off then Fulham would be a very sensible choice. Butland would get the chance to play regularly at an established Premier League side and Fulham need a replacement for veteran Mark Schwarzer.

Southampton would be more of a gamble for Butland and one he may not be willing to take considering his international future.

Kelvin Davies and Artur Boruc are the current ‘keepers in control at Southampton and Butland is good enough to replace either of them.

However, Southampton may be the least willing out of all the clubs interested, in getting involved in a bidding war which will most likely drive the price for Butland closer to £10 million, which then raises the question of if he’s worth it.

Where do you think Butland will eventually go? Is there a chance he will stay at Birmingham?
