Will Walcott's form dip once he's signed a new contract?

Arsenal’s Theo Walcott looks set to sign a £90,000 a week deal to keep him at the Emirates, with some reports even claiming it is done.

The £25 million five-year contract offer is thought to also contain a £3 million signing-on bonus for the 23-year-old who looks likely to put pen to paper in the next few days.

Manager Arsene Wenger is desperate to keep the Englishman and the club have agreed to submit to his demands following Walcott’s impressive form this season.

He’s currently the Gunners’ top scorer with 14 goals in all competitions and has racked up a high number of assists for his teammates.

Wenger also granted the players desire to play through the middle of the Arsenal attack as their central striker in recent weeks, ahead of new signings Olivier Giroud and Lukas Podolski who are both internationally recognized centre-forwards.

However, many have pointed to Walcott’s ongoing contract saga as the catalyst to his improved form this season. Whilst he is a full England international, Walcott had received strong and, at times, harsh criticism for his inconsistent and underwhelming displays for both his club and country.

With his contract due to expire in the summer many have accused him of putting himself in the ‘shop window’ with his impressive performances for the North Londoners in the run up to the January transfer window.

However, should the renewal deal at the Emirates go ahead, I wonder whether the player will revert to type? He is undoubtedly an exceptionally talented but unfortunately it seems, only when he wants something – whether that be more money, a move away, or assurances on his position.

I am inclined to suggest that perhaps once all those questions are answered satisfactorily for the player, a sense of contentment could turn to complacency.

He’s not earned himself a reputation based on his work-rate and still, although seldom this season, has the tendency to ‘go missing’ in games where Arsenal are struggling and need their key players to put in a shift.

Will Theo Walcott’s dreams coming true end up being a bit of nightmare for Arsenal football club?
