If the rumours are true and Sir Alex Ferguson is seriously considering dropping the Spanish youngster what options does he have? Recommendations from La Liga, Serie A, Bundesliga and the Premier League all feature.
Earlier in the week The Daily Mirror reported that Sir Alex Ferguson was ready to ‘dump dodgy David de Gea’ and start searching for a new front-line keeper after growing increasingly aware of his frailties both as a goalkeeper and in terms of physical stature.
Worries have begun to emanate that the young stopper may never fill out physically in the way necessary to command a Premier League area and that has left Fergie contemplating delving into the market for a more bullish operator; similar in style and stature to former stoppers Peter Schmeichel and Edwin Van Der Sar.
So if this speculation does have some credence what options does Sir Alex have in terms of replacing the Spaniard?
While Pepe Reina has been linked the idea of allowing a Liverpool stopper swap for Manchester colours is far to perplexing an idea plus Reina’s talent seems to be on the downward trend; something Sir Alex will be looking to avoid.
So here are five options if there is truth in the rumours…
The Stoke City stopper has been a colossus at The Britannia this season and has been the name most commonly linked with a potential move to Old Trafford other than Reina. The giant Bosnian was recently proclaimed the best keeper in the league by compatriot and Manchester City striker Edin Dzeko and he is certainly in the top five. Tony Pulis claims he is not for sale but at the right price Sir Alex would certainly get his man.
The Sunderland keeper certainly does not get the recognition he deserves but is easily one of; if not the best keeper in the Premier League. He has worked on his crosses and rarely makes mistakes. While his distribution may be lacking slightly you would struggle to find a better shot-stopper in the Premier League.
Marc Andre Ter Stegen
The German youngster has been compared to the legendary Oliver Kahn and Sir Alex would have loved to have been able to call on the former Bayern Munich stopper during his career. Now he has a chance with this brave young pretender. Excellent in one-on-one situations and a brilliant claimer of crosses he is the type of keeper who saves a team ten points a season.
His stock has cooled in recent years since his move to Roma from Ajax but the giant Dutchman is experienced and talented between the sticks. His distribution is magnificent but he has a tendency to be injury prone.
This is the obviously the best option if United could afford him that is. Currently Jose Mourinho is in a dangerous game of chicken with the Real Madrid board over the loyalty of the Spanish number one and arguably the best keeper in the world. He has been dropped from the first team in favour of the below par Adan as Mourinho makes a statement. The problem is to get rid of Mourinho Madrid would have to stump up £10 million-odd while they could earn mega-bucks by selling the Spanish captain. As unlikely as it is; it has never been more likely than now.
Should United replace De Gea?
