With news this week that Frank Lampard will not be offered a new contract to keep him at Chelsea, he will certainly be leaving upon the expiry of his current deal this summer.
Where he’ll be headed is yet to be confirmed but here’s what Chelsea will be missing next season.
5) Chelsea v Sunderland (25/04/10)
First up is his spectacular finish from cross that travelled the best part of 30 yards, floated in to the six-yard box by Sam Hutchinson way out on the right flank. Lampard simply cushions the cross the outside of his right boot, guiding it softly into the back of the net past Asmir Begovic who’ll want to forget that along with the other six goals the Blues put past him.
4) Fulham v Chelsea (28/12/08)
Next is one of the best demonstrations of Lampard free-kick taking. There are many to choose from but this is one of my favourites. It’s fired from thirty-odd yards out. He smacks it with his right foot and it serves around the wall to bounce just in front of the keeper Mark Schwarzer who sees it too late.
3) Chelsea v Norwich (18/12/04)
Lampard’s trademark is found in the high number of goals scored from in and around the D of the penalty area – most of them no keeper in the world could save, they all seem to slot into either one of the top corners of the net, an art of precision practiced over and over and over again on the training ground.
2) Chelsea 4-2 Bayern Munich (08/03/05)
The Blues’ third goal against Bayern was simply sublime – Lampard controls with his head, turns while the ball is in mid-air and smacks it on the volley straight past Oliver Kahn in to the back of the net.
1) Barcelona v Chelsea (31/10/06)
In similar fashion, Lampard’s goal against Barca at the Nou Camp was magical. For starters, the angle is so tight, it’s almost non-existent. He’s right on the by-line and has to float the ball back in to lob the keeper and it just curves, perfectly weighted, into the top right corner of the net. Class.
