Arsenal latest: Including Sissoko and Capoue

News and gossip from The Emirates in the past 24 hours.

Arsenal target Luke Shaw has distanced himself from a move to the club after agreeing a contract extension with current club Southampton. It had been rumoured the South Coast club could once again lose one of their major protégés to a North London side after previously watching Gareth Bale move to Spurs and Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain arrive at The Emirates. However after a quick-fire round of negotiation he has agreed a long-term deal at St Marys much to the pleasure of Southampton and displeasure of Arsenal and Chelsea; who were also reportedly courting the youngster.

Arsenal are one of a few teams being linked with making a last minute move for Dutch international Wesley Sneijder. Tottenham and Liverpool are also being linked after it became clear that Inter Milan had indeed accepted a nominal fee for the player from Turkish outfit Galatasaray. The bid remains the only firm offer for the one-time Uefa midfielder of the year and it is now becoming clear he is desperate to play in the Premier League. However his massive wages of £200k-a-week is looking likely to prevent any potential move to the Premier League.

Arsenal will go into battle with Chelsea for the signature of Toulouse midfield destroyer Etienne Capoue. The highly talented Frenchman is believed to want a move away from Ligue 1 in order to develop his game and Arsenal see him as a perfect option to strengthen up a flimsy midfield. However the interest from Chelsea will be a worry as they too are desperate for a new holding midfield player and could blow Arsenal out of the water financially.

However the club may in fact be after one of Capoue’s talented team-mates as a potential deal for Moussa Sissoko is now being touted. A deal could be even more likely in this case considering the dynamic midfielder's contract situation. His current deal runs out at the end of the season and so far he has shown no desire in negotiating a new and extended deal. Once again Arsenal will have competition from the Premier League as both Spurs and in particular Newcastle United are said to be very keen on his signature.

Carl Jenkinson could be sent out on loan by Arsene Wenger in order for him to continue playing first-team football. The youngster performed admirably at right-back throughout the start of the season when French international Bacary Sagna was nursing his way back to full fitness following a leg break. Despite impressing enough to earn an England call-up since Sagna’s return he has barely had a look in and Crystal Palace are reportedly keen to bring him in for the last months of the season.

And finally it appears that West Brom defender Jonas Olsson is holding out on a potential move to QPR as he is hoping Arsenal will rival the relegation threatened side to his signature.
