Chelsea lost their cup semi-final last night, and star signing Eden Hazard started brightly but couldn't swing the game for the home side. Manchester United fans on Twitter have been expressing their opinion on the player who snubbed them last summer.
£32 million. That's how much Eden Hazard cost Chelsea this summer, and he brought with it a lot of pressure. He also brought an excellent Ligue One record of 20 goals and 17 assists. That brought expectation.
He also snubbed Manchester United, who wanted to sign the Belgian, but were kicked to the kerb by the starlet when Chelsea expressed their interest.
It was obvious that this season was always going to be a tough acclimatisation period for him, and starting it like a house on fire only built the expectation, but in recent months he has failed to shine with any real consistency.
Last night was a case in point of his inconsistency, in a cup semi-final at home to a dangerous Swansea side, Chelsea needed their big summer signing to step up and influence the game. He started well, and looked bright, but failed to inspire the side to scoring an important equaliser, let alone win the game.
The statistics show this season he has racked up 16 assists and scored six goals for Chelsea in all competitions, which to be fair has been fantastic, but watching him it doesn't quite feel like he is in the groove he ought to be.
Perhaps bringing Ba into the side will help him, as Torres looks simply awful at the moment. Hazard does have it, but at present his influence on games is only fleeting.
A quick twitter search on Eden Hazard last night included plenty of Manchester United fans criticising the players form and expressing their satisfaction they did not 'waste their money' on the player.
@dhugga_mufc: Cant believe chelsea played 32m for hazard overpriced !!! Thank god united didnt sign him
@eliotthowes: Hazard is a waste of money. He played in a s*** league and talked his way into a massive contract
@jusovdb: Hazard is one of thee most overrated players!! Glad we didn't get him
@9_tom_dean: Eden hazard has been a disappointment all season, not impressed me nearly enough for the initial hype
@fresh4lyf: Every time I watch Eden Hazard playing I thank God Man United did not 'waste' £30+million pounds on him. He's no better than Kagawa
@ajryaaan: I'm delighted United didn't sign Hazard.
@_singhness: so glad man utd didnt waste there money on hazard
@tha_slimkidd: Glad we lost out on the hazard chase... Been ordinary after all the hype
So are these just sour grapes from United fans or are they genuinely glad they missed out on him? Well it is the modern football psyche to back your own players to the hilt and slag off the rest, but if Hazard was in unstoppable form and really fulfilling his hype, United fans would be cursing his snub and not the other way around.
But before we throw the topic out for discussion, one thing which should be noted is this season's assists: Hazard 16, compared with Manchester United's wingers Valencia, 5, Ashley Young 5, and Nani 2. More than the three combined.
Was Hazard's fee excessive? What do you think of his performances? Are United fans right to slag him off?
