10 facts about Newcastle United transfer target Florian Thauvin

Newcastle United

What can we tell you about this French talent described as a 'diamond in the rough'?

Newcastle United have not followed up on what was a great season last year with much verve this campaign; in fact they are even in danger of being dragged into a relegation fight. Injuries have not helped matters in the slightest while the recent loss of Demba Ba to Chelsea can only make matter worse.

However Pardew now looks to invest some of that money raised to bring in yet another French-speaking talent in the form of Bastia midfielder Florian Thauvin. The 19-year-old is being pursued as one for the future but he could well be involved in the first team sooner rather than later in the clubs current situation.

But what can we tell you about him?

1. Thauvin was born on the 26th January 1993 making him 19-years-old.

2. He started his career at various amateur sides such as FCO Saint-Jean-de-la-Reulle before signing for US Orleans in 2007.

3. After one season with his hometown club he signed for Grenoble on a professional scholarship.

4. He made his debut in March 2011 during a 1-1 draw with Vannes and went on to play three games for the club before they went bankrupt and were relegated to the bottom tier of French football in 2011.

5. He went on to sign his first pro-contract with Corsican side SC Bastia that summer.

6. He made his debut for the side as a late substitute in a 3-1 Ligue 2 win over Angers on the 23rd September 2011.

7. In his first season at the club he featured in 15 first team games mostly from the substitute bench as his side won promotion to Ligue 1 as champions.

8. This season he has become a regular in the side featuring in 16 appearances and scoring twice; a fantastic match-winning brace against Bordeaux in October.

9. The attacking midfielder has also represented the French national team at youth level accumulating many caps at under-18, under-19 and under-20 level.

10. France football magazine named him a 'diamond in the rough' in 2011 and compared his playing style to that of Arjen Robben or Angel Di Maria.

Here are his goals from earlier in the season…
