NextGen Series Preview: Liverpool must beat champions Internazionale to advance

St Helens is the venue as Liverpool face an absolute must-win tie against last years winners Inter Milan. We preview the game and look at some of the excitement of Liverpool players ahead of the game.

NextGen Series football returns after an extended winter break tonight as Liverpool prepare to clash with reigning champions Inter Milan in a must-win tie. The venue will be Langtree Park, St Helens where The Reds are so far unbeaten in the competition this season after 3-0 and 4-1 wins over Borussia Dortmund and Rosenborg respectively.

Inter come into the fixture having already advanced to the latter stages but a heavy defeat could see them slip to runners-up position behind the impressive Norwegian outfit so will not take the game lightly. The last time the two met was in September on Matchday One when Inter ran out 3-2 winners despite a man-of-the-match performance from Hungarian playmaker Kristztjan Adorjan.

For Liverpool the maths is quite simple. Nothing but a win will do in order to qualify as one of the four best placed third-placed teams. At the moment Alex Inglethorpe’s team sit on six points with the other teams in contention Marseille and Chelsea both on eight. Therefore a draw would not be enough; and would conclude the Group Stages as a competition as Chelsea and Marseille would join Spurs and PSV Eindhoven as best-ranked third-placed teams.

If Liverpool were to win it would mark a remarkable turnaround in fortunes to earn qualification after an abysmal start to competition. They lost their opening there fixtures including a 3-0 humbling in Trondheim to leave them on zero points halfway through proceedings.

The team has suffered from losing several of their star players to the first-team under Brendan Rodgers’ policy on selecting youth-team players with the likes of Raheem Sterling and Suso no longer featuring for the NextGen side but players such as Jerome Sinclair, Adorjan and Conor Coady have continued to feature with aplomb; however top striker Adam Morgan will not be available after agreeing a loan-spell at Rotherham United over the weekend.

Nevertheless Liverpool will do everything in their power to secure the win they need to make it into the next stage.

The players have been venting their excitement on Twitter…
