Manchester United set to miss out on Dortmund star

Manchester United 3

Manchester United are set to miss out on a highly rated 23-year-old Borussia Dortmund midfielder.

Sven Bender has signed a long-term contract extension with his current club Borussia Dortmund which has cast doubt over a possible move to Manchester United.

Sir Alex Ferguson is reported to have been tracking the progress of the £15 million rated star with a view to possibly making a bid for Bender in the summer.

However, the likeliness of this is now in doubt as Bender has signalled his intent to stay in Germany by signing a new contract with the club. United will be hoping it’s nothing more than Dortmund ensuring they get top money for one of their best assets.

He has failed to hold down a regular starting place in the side this season due to injury as the current German champions have slipped 12 points behind current Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich.

It’s not all doom and gloom if this news means Bender’s availability is off the table because United have been linked with a variety of other midfielders.

Lars Bender, Sven’s brother, is another target for the Old Trafford club with the Bayer Leverkusen midfield an almost carbon copy of current United legend Paul Scholes.

There has also been strong speculation linking the club with Kevin Strootman of PSV Eindhoven. However, Liverpool have now entered the race to sign the highly talented Dutchman which is likely to force up the transfer fee.

Real Madrid may also prove a useful resource for Manchester United in their quest to fill the void which will be left by Scholes and Ryan Giggs.

United have been linked with a move for Mesut Ozil from the Spanish champions and fresh doubt has been cast over the future of Luka Modric at the Spanish club.

Either player could be available in the summer which is generally when United make their more high profile moves for top players.

However, Sir Alex Ferguson seems keener than ever before to bring in raw types of players, with Robin Van Persie the exception, that he can transform and turn into global superstars.

It would arguably be his best ever move if he managed to get the Bender brothers to join United this summer but considering what the club is losing in Scholes and Giggs, he would probably settle for just one of them.

Who should United be targeting?
