Liverpool are said to be closing in on the signing of Lazio defender Modibo Diakite. The Metro reports that wages are one of the main issues preventing the deal from going through.

Liverpool face stiff competition from Arsenal and Everton for the transfer of Wigan star James McCarthy. McCarthy has been described as one of the most underrated midfielders in the Premier League and Liverpool may have to show their hand early to stop their rivals from attracting the player.

Howard Webb has been named as the referee for this weekend’s Premier League clash between Manchester United and Liverpool at Old Trafford. Webb has not officiated the match since the infamous picture published by former Liverpool midfielder Ryan Babel showing Webb wearing a United shirt.

Borussia Dortmund are the favourites to sign out of favour Liverpool midfielder Nuri Sahin at the end of the season. The youngster is on loan at Anfield from Real Madrid and widespread reports have suggested Dortmund will move at the end of the season to sign him on a permanent transfer.

Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler says striker Luis Suarez did nothing wrong with his goal against Mansfield over the weekend. Suarez appeared to handle the ball before passing it into the net but Fowler has claimed the reaction to the incident has been way over the top.

Captain Steven Gerrard has described the first half of the season as ‘mixed’ and says he wants to get back into an attacking role. Gerrard has been used in various midfield roles so far this season but he is at his best when he is allowed to bomb forward and support the striker or strikers.

Liverpool remain Manchester United’s biggest rivals according to United player Paul Scholes. Scholes has said the rivalry between the two clubs, due to meet this weekend, is bigger than United’s rivalry with Manchester City. The sides meet on Sunday at Old Trafford.

ESPN have apologised for branding Liverpool striker Luis Suarez a cheat during the coverage of the club’s FA Cup clash against Mansfield. Live commentator Jon Champion called Suarez a chat after TV replays showed he had handled the ball during the build up to Liverpool’s second goal.
