Rumours around White Hart Lane suggest that they have funds to make a marquee signing this January, should that money be put towards trying to get the Portuguese player they came so close to buying in the summer?
It's nigh on impossible to try and predict exactly what's in Daniel Levy's mind when it comes to a transfer window, and considering he is now coupled with the tight-lipped Andre Villas-Boas, rather than the more open Harry Redknapp, it's even more tricky to guess what could happen at White Hart Lane.
However there are suggestions from plenty of sources that Spurs will be looking to add a marquee name to the squad at some point this January, and given their past attempts to secure Joao Moutinho, he is a name that will always be linked with the club.
Putting aside the likelihood of whether Moutinho is willing to move to Spurs halfway through a season where Porto have progressed to the knockout stages of the Champions League, and indeed whether Porto would be prepared to sell their star man, it's worth debating whether Moutinho is the signing Spurs need to make the most.
The arguments for going all out for Moutinho are obvious. Andre Villas-Boas rates him as the key man in the system he is looking to implement at White Hart Lane and if Spurs were to sign him it would send the clearest possible message that they are backing their manager to the hilt. Moutinho is also a world class player, and would combine with Dembele, Sandro and Parker to form one of the strongest midfield quartets in the league.
However despite this, there is a case for saying if Spurs can only afford one big signing, perhaps they should look to other areas of the pitch. Up front they are completely reliant on Jermain Defoe and Emanuel Adebayor, with the latter perhaps set to leave White Hart Lane for a month if he reconciles with Togo. Spurs have greater strength in midfield now Parker is fit, and could even be adding Lewis Holtby to their ranks in the near future.
However in my opinion, Moutinho is the man Spurs should go all out to buy, as he is probably the single best player that is currently attainable to them (if reports are to be believed). But what do you think, should all their efforts be focussed on Joao Moutinho?
