The Frenchman who could solve Sunderland's problems

Who is Guillaume Hoarau and is he the answer to Sunderland’s problems?

The Daily Mirror has reported that Sunderland are tracking the progress of Paris Saint-Germain striker Guillaume Hoarau after reports have suggested the club have told him he can leave this month.

Sunderland are just four points above the drop zone in 14th place while Hoarau would undoubtedly add to the attacking power of the club, they may find it difficult to complete a move for the forward.

There is no doubt they need something extra up front because only Aston Villa and Queens Park Rangers have scored fewer goals at home this season and the club have only bagged ten goals away from home.

All of the pressure at the club is on Steven Fletcher, a superb striker when he’s fit and in form but Martin O’Neill needs different options and Hoarau would provide just that if the club can convince him to move.

The biggest stumbling block is getting him to move from PSG where he has spent the last five seasons to a currently struggling Premier League side where he is unlikely to get the same sort of contract he’s currently on.

So it’s all down to the passion and desire of the player and whether he wants to play occasionally and sit on a big wage deal or sacrifice that to play football and make a name for himself in England.

Hoarau is a very efficient striker who can play the target role well because of his height; six feet and four inches. He has earned five international caps with France so he would be bringing a great deal of pedigree and experience to the club.

His ratio for PSG is not breathtaking at 38 goals in 111 appearances but at over one in three it remains credible. The role he would play in the Sunderland attack would allow the midfield to consolidate, stay organised and go back to basics in terms of shape and formation.

He is fit and he is available because he is not going to get into the PSG side in front of Zlatan Ibrahimovic. If Martin O’Neill is interested then he needs to work his magic and get Hoarau signed on the dotted line because there’s no doubt Sunderland need something different up front.

Most importantly it would also just give everyone at the club a big lift which a lot of Sunderland fans and officials could use at the moment because of the poor run of form the club has been on for most of the season.
