Arsenal latest: Including Chamakh and Howedes

News and gossip from The Emirates this past 24 hours.

Arsenal misfit Marouane Chamakh has left the club after agreeing to join West Ham United on loan until the end of the season. The Moroccan striker has struggled to hold down a regular spot at the club over the past two seasons and was expected to return to his former club Bordeaux this January. However the French side could not afford his wages which has seen West Ham swoop in to confirm his temporary purchase.

Ahead of Arsenal’s game with Swansea this Sunday Arsene Wenger has confirmed he will be looking to field a strong team in the FA Cup Third Round tie. He says he will resist any rotational desire against a Swansea team who recently inflicted a 2-0 victory over The Gunners at The Emirates. The FA Cup remains Arsenal’s best chance of silverware this season; they are out the Carling Cup, way off the pace in the Premier League and face a difficult last 16 tie with Bayern Munich in the Champions League.

Another Schalke player is being mooted as a potential transfer target for The Gunners. After missing out on Klaas Jan Huntelaar and Lewis Holtby they are now looking at Benedikt Howedes as a potential new signing. The German international, 24, is contracted at the club till 2014 but has put talks over an extension on the backburner as he considers his options.

Arsenal are also looking into another Southampton left-back other than Luke Shaw. Matt Targett has been impressing for Southampton’s under-21 side and the 17-year-old has now caught the attention of The Gunners as well as Liverpool and Chelsea and considering his low profile in comparison to Shaw he would be available at a much lower price.

Johan Djourou has moved one step closer to a move away from The Emirates. The player is expected to fly out to Germany this weekend to hold talks with Bundesliga outfit Hannover 96 about a potential loan deal. The Swiss international has struggled for first team football this season and was previously linked with Italian sides Napoli and Roma but now seems to have his heart set on a move to Germany.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has proclaimed his admiration for new Chelsea recruit Demba Ba and claims the reason they never moved to sign him this summer was due to Olivier Giroud. It came down to a straight decision between the two as they possess similar playing styles but in the end Wenger chose the Frenchman despite his fondness for the former Newcastle United marksman. Was it a good decision, have your say here.
