Papiss Cisse lined up from the right hand side once again last night as they went down 2-1 at home to Everton. Despite scoring a goal fans cannot wait to see Cisse playing through the middle once again.
As Everton welcomed back their talisman Marouane Fellaini from suspension for the fixture with Newcastle United on Wednesday night The Magpies were bracing themselves to say bye to their very own. Demba Ba has long been the talk of transfer conjecture as his contract had a built in release clause; a release clause that was met by Chelsea. In light of those circumstances the club decided to remove him from the squad for the game at St James Park.
For one player it was the perfect opportunity. Papiss Cisse has reportedly had something of a mixed relationship with Ba and as a partnership the two clicked sparingly during their time together at Newcastle. In fact at international level the two also fail to create the type of magic you might expect.
With Ba gone however it did give Cisse the chance to demonstrate his centre-forward abilities once again. This season has seen Cisse used out wide in order to accommodate Ba in the centre-forward position but with his compatriot out of the picture it seemed logical that Cisse would waltz into that position against Everton.
In reality however Alan Pardew called in Shola Ameobi to the side and continued to play Cisse from the right hand side. Such a decision did not seem to matter after little more than 70 seconds when Cisse was gifted an unmissable opportunity to give the Toon a 1-0 lead as Sylvain Distin and Johnny Heitinga colluded to take each other out in mid-air.
Some fans were desperately disappointed to see Cisse remaining out wide and despite putting in a solid shift down the flank against arguably the best left side combination in the league in the form of Steven Pienaar and Leighton Baines it was still questionable as to why exactly Pardew played him wide once again.
Dear mr Pardew,Papiss Cisse is a CENTRE FORWARD!the clue is there somewhere!!#NUFC— David foster (@Dfozzy1970) January 3, 2013
personally think papiss cisse is wasted on the wing and that's literally the only positive of ba leaving— tom uttley (@tomutt) January 2, 2013
Looks like Papiss Cisse will still be on the right wing in tonight's game against Everton. #NUFC— NUFCnewsnow (@NUFCnewsnow) January 2, 2013
There were more but unfortunately some members of the Toon Army have a bad habit of being a slightly to flagrant with their wording on Twitter but they followed a similar rhetoric.
In the managers defence the club are currently in a mini-injury crisis and options were extremely limited anyway which might have forced his hand but it may cause concern that Cisse will still remain out wide when Newcastle replace the departing Ba.
The signing of Loic Remy is being mooted as highly possible and this deal would do much to ease any worries Newcastle fans have over the continued wide presence of a deadly centre-forward like Cisse. The Marseille man is more than adept out wide and would have no issue with playing from the right leaving the striker role Cisse’s for the taking.
Cisse arrived a year ago and went on a buffet-style scoring streak from February until the end of the season and some Newcastle fans may start to hope that the absence of Ba will in the long run bring the best out of Cisse.
Would you have played Cisse out wide last night?
