Luke Shaw to Chelsea? The Positives and Negatives

Chelsea Huddle

Here are some possible positives and negatives if Chelsea revitalise their interest in teenage full back Luke Shaw from Southampton.

Chelsea were linked with Southampton’s Luke Shaw last summer with reports doing the rounds that they had stuck in a £4 million bid for him. With Ashley Cole set to move on this coming summer, Shaw is the ideal long term replacement to come in and take his place at just 17-years-old.

Positives

Should Shaw join Chelsea then he will benefit from the wealth of experience that other players at the club possess. Chelsea are laced with experienced international players who would undoubtedly improve his game.

Chelsea’s style of play would also suit Shaw and improve his game in an attacking and defensive sense. It would also allow him to have more of an immediate impact because it is similar to the way Southampton like to play football.

Personally a move to Chelsea would be great for sure away from the pitch. He would most likely receive a bigger and better deal than the one he is currently on at the Saints.

It would substantially improve his chances of winning the best silverware available in England and Europe. Cole’s imminent exit from the side means he could quickly become the first choice left back at the club after any move.

Negatives

Any inconsistency would see him put behind Ryan Bertrand in the pecking order for the left back position. Bertrand is only 23-years-old so this would be counter productive for Shaw’s career.

Shaw has only ever been a Southampton lad. He was born in London but has spent his entire career at Southampton. His age means a transition to West London could be difficult making the player home sick.

Moving to a club like Chelsea creates massive pressure which has the ability to make good players crumble. Shaw would be protected from this by Chelsea but it will be one of the major worries for the club should they try to sign him.

Shaw is settled into a system at Southampton and has a guaranteed place in the side. Cole is expected to move on From Chelsea but if he stayed then Shaw would become the third choice left back at the club.

Would this be a good move for Shaw? Let us know your opinions.
