News and gossip from The Emirates in the past 24 hours.
Arsene Wenger has insisted that tying down Theo Walcott to a new deal is the main priority this January rather than any other improvements to the squad. Wenger believes that the 23-year-olds final decision will not be based on financial reasons and he went on to urge the forward to agree a new deal as fast as possible as it could give the club a big boost heading into the second half of the season.
French international Yann M’Vila has dropped the biggest hint yet that he is considering moving away this January - which may come as welcome news for Arsenal. Despite facing likely competition from the likes of QPR and Tottenham The Gunners have held a vested interest in the acquisition of the Rennes midfielder previously and according to the player if a potential deal was to materialise ‘there is no doubt’ that he would leave.
Another player that Arsenal have been linked with recently is German international Lewis Holtby. However as previously with another Schalke transfer target Klaas Jan Huntelaar it looks as if Arsenal may have to get used to the idea of not welcoming the talented central midfielder to The Emirates as he is reported to be more favourable of a move to Tottenham. His contract expires at the end of the season and it is understood he is already in pre-contract talks with numerous suitors.
Southampton manager Nigel Adkins has refuted claims that Arsenal have been in contact in regards to the availability of promising left-back Luke Shaw. The teenager has become a first team regular at St Marys this season and it was thought that Arsenal may try tempt him into following the footsteps of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Theo Walcott by moving to The Emirates; however as of now no contact has been made.
Arsene Wenger has informed press that defensive misfits Johan Djourou and Sebastian Squillaci can leave the club in January if the right deal comes in for either of them. Djourou has recently been linked with a move to Hannover 96 while Squillaci was reportedly a transfer target for a host of Ligue 1 sides including Montpellier.
Crystal Palace have once again moved to insist that Wilfried Zaha will not be leaving the club until the end of the season. The England international has been the Championship’s star-performer this term and is believed to have narrowed his options down to either Arsenal or Manchester United but will not make any move until the end of this campaign.
