In this series Nick Harris looks at some of the young players who may be the biggest new stars of 2013. Viktor Fischer is the subject of this article, with the teenager already starting to impress for the Ajax first team.
Given that Viktor Fischer has already played a Champions League match against Real Madrid, it would be fair to say that he has already made a significant breakthrough in his career. However Fischer has only started to feature for Ajax’s senior side in the past couple of months, and given his talent, there will be plenty more to see of him in 2013.
Fischer has been one of the standout players in the Next Gen tournament over its first two seasons, finishing joint top of the goals rankings last season, and leading them again this time around. He came into his own in the knockout stages last year, scoring twice against Barcelona in the quarter final, before firing in a hat trick in the 6-0 semi-final win over Liverpool.
The Dane is clearly a natural goalscorer, and has so far demonstrated that he can translate that to any level he plays at. Fischer also possesses electric pace and the technical ability you would expect from an Ajax youth player.
Like fellow Dane and Ajax star Christian Eriksen, Fischer has made his international debut at a very young age, with Denmark looking to integrate him early to make the most of his exceptional talent. Along with Eriksen and Fischer, Denmark also have 20 year old Nicolai Boileson starting his international career, another talented youth player from Ajax, and the trio could form the basis of an impressive side for many years.
There is an incredible amount of hype already surrounding Fischer, and Ajax are no doubt already having to fend off plenty of suitors. With their record in bringing through young players, Fischer will know he is at the best possible club to develop his career, with Eriksen’s rapid rise an example of what he can achieve in the Netherlands.
There is no substitute for the benefits of first team experience, and with Fischer having featured on several occasions for the first team already, there is every reason to believe that he will be a regular for Ajax and Denmark next year. If he continues to develop at his current rate, there’s every chance that Fischer will be one of the most talked about players in Europe next year.
