News and gossip from The Emirates in the past 24 hours
Arsenal fans will be pleased to know that there are no new injury concerns ahead of the fixture with Wigan Athletic on Saturday. Olivier Giroud is now considered full fit after his recent absences and could start however he will have to usurp Theo Walcott from the position after he impressed up-top against Reading on Monday. Just Andre Santos and Abou Diaby remain out from the first team with respective stomach and thigh injuries.
Wigan Athletic have often proved the scourge of Arsenal in the past but they are desperately decimated by injury problems in comparison to Arsenal’s relatively healthy squad. Eight first-team players could be ruled out for the fixture with the most high profile of those being midfield talisman James McCarthy who has an ankle problem. Antolin Alcaraz, Ivan Ramis, Gary Caldwell, Ben Watson, Albert Crusat and Adrian Piscu Lopez are all out while Ryo Miyaichi is also sidelined; although would not have been eligible to play either way due to the terms of his loan-deal at the DW Stadium.
Arsene Wenger has been quoted as saying that Theo Walcott owes the club in regards to a new contract as they gambled on him over more experienced players back in 2006. Wenger believes that, in general, because he takes a chance on young players they should feel a small obligation to stay with the club for as long as possible in order to repay him for his show of faith in their ability.
Comments attributed to Demba Ba about a potential move to Arsenal were reportedly ‘lost in translation’ according to the Senegalese striker. There was a report that he had told media in France that he would be interested in a move to The Gunners and Alan Pardew was reportedly upset at the comments and considered fining Ba. However the 27-year-old has explained the situation to his manager and no further action will be taken.
Arsenal have received and rejected a bid for Brazilian full-back Andre Santos. The left-back has been out of favour at the club since he turned out a poor performance against Manchester United and then swapped shirts with Robin Van Persie at half-time to further anger Gunners fans. Galatasaray are the team in question but Arsenal are reportedly after a fee much closer to the £7.5 million they paid for him last January.
West Ham have been linked with a move for Moroccan misfit Maraoune Chamakh. Sam Allardyce is considering sending Andy Carroll back to Liverpool after he has struggled to remain fit so far this campaign. The striker is surplus to requirements at The Emirates and former club Bordeaux are also interested.
