The French side have seen more of their players being linked with a move away in January then many others across Europe. With Newcastle United, Arsenal, Liverpool and Everton all among the teams reportedly sharking around their hottest assets will they be able to fend them off?
Last season saw Montpellier win the Ligue 1 title for the first time in their history and with it finally put football at the front of the sporting backdrop in France’s southern city. The city has previously been considered rugby territory and their success went some way to dispelling that myth. Last season’s French Top 14 rugby season was won overall by Toulouse and now there is no doubt that their footballing equivalents are about to make an impact on European football in a very different way to Montpellier.
While the Toulouse rugby side attract some of the best talent in France to ply their trade at the Stade Ernest-Wallon down the road at the Stadium Municipal the team from the Pink City’s football side are looking at losing some of their brightest talents to teams across the continent; including those in England.
So which players currently plying their trade for Alain Casanova’s Toulouse side could be on their way to the Premier League?
Well the fact remains that there are many players talented enough to make the step up. The French transfer market has become an oasis spring in the European market as the clubs rarely ask for prices that are not consistent with the quality of the players being offered and they are often up to date with the style of play needed to be successful domestically in the UK.
Many a great French import has achieved great things in the Premier League in the past. Eric Cantona, Thierry Henry, Patrick Vieira and David Ginola all spring to mind while more recently the likes of Yohan Cabaye, Didier Drogba and Hatem Ben Arfa have all taken to the Premier League with aplomb.
At Toulouse there is Etienne Capoue and Moussa Sissoko who are truly causing a fuss. Capoue has been given freedom to roam further up the pitch this season after the implementation of Sissoko and Etienne Didot in the more defensive roles and with that has come an entirely new dimension to his game. In fact the entire midfield has been linked with transfers in particular Moussa Sissoko. The French international along with fellow Les Bleus Capoue has been linked with the likes of Newcastle United, Liverpool and Arsenal. Considering his contract is expiring at the end of the season his impending arrival seems inevitable.
Now the likes of Wissam Ben Yedder, a breakout performer so far this season has also been linked with a move to Everton; the man he has forced onto the bench Emmanuel Riviere is also a highly talented young player. Add reported Arsenal targets Aymen Abdennour and Cheikh M’Bengue to the equation and it is clear that not many clubs are going to be receiving more phone-calls in January than that of the front-desk at Toulouse Football Club.
Abdennour, M’Bengue, Yedder, Didot, Capoue, Riviere, Sissoko; Which of Toulouse’s stars would you like to see playing in the Premier League?
