Newcastle can't let Danny Simpson leave

Danny Simpson

Newcastle United may have a fight on their hands to keep hold of full back Danny Simpson this January. It would be a bad move for Alan Pardew to let him leave.

Reports are circulating that Fulham and Queens Park Rangers could be about to try and steal Danny Simpson away from Newcastle. If this happens then someone needs to grab Alan Pardew by the scruff of the neck and ask him what on earth he thinks he’s doing.

Newcastle are struggling badly at the moment in terms of injuries and forms. The club need to be looking at retaining players and not offloading to other teams that could be fighting for similar positions by the end of the season. Simpson offers many positives to the current side to say it would be naïve to let him leave is an understatement.

Simpson has turned himself into one of the first choice defenders for the club this season making ten starts in the Premier League and three starts in the Europa League. Defensively he needs to work hard on his game but he looks a solid player all round who can definitely offer more to Newcastle for the rest of the season.

One of his biggest attributes is his pace which makes him very important as a full back. There are times when he is forward with the Newcastle attack, his pace allows him to get back quickly and get into his defensive position which means the overall shape of the back line isn’t compromised.

You would also have to question the move on the part of the player if it happened because Simpson would be in a similar position or enjoy a similar role at either Fulham or QPR. He would not be the high profile first choice defender at either of those clubs and Newcastle are a much bigger club.

The speculation has come up because the club are currently struggling to get Simpson tied down to a new deal. It could be a case of personal terms or the role he plays in the side but Newcastle have not taken that offer off of the table and they could choose to improve it after a busy Christmas and New Year period.

The roots of the interest from Fulham and QPR goes back to the summer when both clubs reportedly made enquiries about Simpson. As far as QPR are concerned, new manager Harry Redknapp may not be interested in Simpson although he will be interested in strengthening the defence.

As things stand it is highly unlikely that Simpson will be leaving Newcastle and it would be stupid of them to let him go because he’s one of the best young full backs in the country.
