Grant ruled out means lack of options if Benitez is axed

Chelsea Fans

Chelsea have rejected reports that former boss Avram Grant will be drafted in to help Rafael Benitez. So what will happen if the Spaniard is given the boot?

Rafa Benitez has already spoken of the pressure he is under as Chelsea manager. Rumours were rife yesterday that former Chelsea gaffer Avram Grant was being considered for an advisory role which would help take some of this pressure away from Benitez.

The club moved quickly to rubbish the rumours which will lead many to thinking about what will happen if Benitez is axed. It now seems unlikely because one of the most experienced and available coaches in the game will not be approached to come back to his former club.

Chelsea now have two options if Roman Abramovich pulls the trigger even faster than he did to get rid of Roberto Di Matteo. They can look for a similar high profile manager to Benitez to come in and do a job or they can approach someone within the club infrastructure to take care of the team for the rest of the season. How they probably wish Ray Wilkins was still on the staff.

It’s difficult to look round and get an idea of the sort of managers who may come in as a Benitez replacement. Promoting someone from within the club would certainly go a long way to appeasing many sections of fans who have made their thoughts about Benitez perfectly clear.

Doing this would ensure that Chelsea use someone who knows the club and knows the team. It would satisfy the fans because they would get someone in charge who has Chelsea blood running through their veins over someone who has publicly criticised the club on frequent occasions.

There will be very few available managers in the game who would even want to go anywhere near Chelsea because of the brutal way in which managers and coaches are treated. However, it is still a very high profile job and someone like Guus Hiddink could be tempted back for a second spell in temporary charge of the team.

Chelsea supporters groups have urged Abramovich to hold more open forums on a regular basis over advice and what to do with all things Chelsea related. If they were approached in relation to what may happen if Benitez is about to be booted then the club can enjoy the rest of the season without having to needlessly chant every time the 16th minute comes up in a match.
