News and gossip from The Emirates in the past 24 hours.
Arsene Wenger has begun urging Jack Wilshere into talking about a potential contract extension at The Emirates. The 20-year-old has just made his comeback from a series of serious injuries and Wenger believes the best way for the England international to demonstrate his commitment to the club would be through signing a bumper new deal. It is also being reported that Wenger is considering handing him the Arsenal captaincy as an added sweetener to the deal.
Arsenal have been linked with Reading defender Sean Morrison. The 21-year-old centre back has been in impressive form for Reading and even scored his first goal for the club this weekend against Wigan Athletic. His form has impressed England under-21 boss Stuart Pearce as well as Arsenal scouts who are considering a move for the player at the end of the season.
Everton striker Nikica Jelavic has emerged as a surprise transfer target for The Gunners as he reportedly seeks a move away from Goodison Park. Reports suggest that Jelavic has fallen out with summer recruit Kevin Mirallas over his perceived ‘greediness’ in possession and is now looking at moving away from Merseyside as soon as possible. Arsenal have become the first team noted with an interest for the former Rangers Croatian striker.
Arsene Wenger will make a decision on whether to fast-track German youngster Thomas Eisfeld into the first-team fold ‘shortly’. The attacking midfielder has scored seven times in 11 starts for Arsenal’s under-21 team and impressed during the 7-5 win against Reading in the League Cup. It is expected that Eisfeld will feature in some way against Bradford City in the League Cup.
Arsenal have again been linked with Inter Milan forward Ricardo Alvarez. The Argentine turned down The Gunners in favour of the Nerazzurri but now Arsenal are hoping to capitalise on his Serie A unhappiness by giving him the chance to impress in the Premier League. However the stumbling block may be the €10 million being quoted for the 24-year-old.
Wilfried Zaha has coyly been confirmed as an Arsenal target by boss Wenger as long as a compromise can be found on the asking price being quoted by Crystal Palace for the recent England debutant. Wenger announced that Zaha is ‘’not more on the list than anybody else’’ and amid the protracted contract negotiations with Theo Walcott they see Zaha as the perfect replacement if Walcott does decide on moving on.
