French-based players have become a hot property in the English Premier League. Ligue 1’s similar playing pattern to and the relatively cheap cost of talent from across The Channel makes it rich hunting ground for English clubs.
While the names of Yann M’Vila, Lucas Digne, Mathieu Debuchy and Mapou Yanga M’Biwa continue to be mentioned there are other potential deals that everyone should be keeping their eyes on.
Etienne Capoue – Toulouse
The 24-year-old defensive midfielder made his international debut for France earlier this year and has been an ever present in the Toulouse midfield for four seasons now. This type of form is finally starting to attract the warranted interest from Barcelona, Inter Milan and Benfica but Arsenal and Spurs are also considered front-runners. His agent says it ‘depends on Toulouse now’ and either North London side would be mad not to make an enquiry at least.
Moussa Sissoko – Toulouse
Capuoue’s midfield partner is also reportedly seeking a move away and is out of contract in the summer. Le Téfécé would be remiss to lose both of their star players in the January window so the likes of Everton, Spurs, Fulham and Liverpool may want to make their move for the 23-year-old now. However the Daily Mail believe the French international has his heart set on joining the Francophone contingent at Newcastle United.
Yannick Sagbo – Evian Thonon
"I would love to play in the Premier League. I was linked before but nothing happened so I am relaxed about it.’’
Those were the words of Ivorian striker Sagbo back in July and the likes of QPR, Fulham and West Ham have all pushed for his signature recently. French-based journalist Jonathan Johnson feels if Sagbo wants a move he will get it in January amidst the current uncertainty at his club Evian.
Yoann Gouffran – Bordeaux
Another player whose contract is running toward its end in the summer the 26-year-old striker has reportedly made his intentions for leaving abundantly clear. QPR have been the side most strongly linked with his signature but that was before Harry Redknapp’s arrival and he may not have such plans. He has his heart set on a move to England however:
‘’I always said that I wanted to try playing in the Premier League and discover something else.”
With Aston Villa and Sunderland also keen Bordeaux want to cash in on their talent in January rather than lose him for nothing in the summer like they did previously with Maraoune Chamakh.
Gaetan Courtet – Stade Reims
The striker has been linked with a move to Newcastle United after an impressive debut season in Ligue 1 with Stade Reims. Currently out injured the 23-year-old has already had to overcome major adversity after successfully overcoming testicular cancer last summer. Fast, strong and agile he could be a perfect addition to Newcastle United’s front three.
Would you like to see any of these players at your club in the near future?
