Dutch sensation Riechedly Bazoer has decided to turn down reported interest from Chelsea, Manchester City, Arsenal, Newcastle United and Inter Milan to remain in Holland. However the 16-year-old has switched PSV for Ajax. We take a look at the surprise deal.
About a week ago I posted a story on why I believed Dutch teenager Riechedly Bazoer was most likely to sign for Chelsea rather than the many other clubs being linked with his signature. Manchester City and Arsenal were just two examples of other clubs who had reportedly shown an interest in the PSV Eindhoven 16-year-old.
The Chelsea suggestion was based on Bazoer recently tying himself down to a deal with Dutch based football agency Forza Sports Group who already represented Chelsea youngsters Nathan Ake and Kenneth Omeruo. I figured I had done some pretty decent investigative work and looked forward to seeing myself proven right within the coming weeks.
I was wrong.
It seems Bazoer is a little more headstrong then we thought and has listened to the advice of PSV sporting director Marcel Brands when it came to a decision over his next move:
‘’We have offered him a professional contract now he has turned 16. I speak with the family, the boy and his agents. We hope we will get an answer soon. What is his intention? Is it to develop or go for bigger money in England? You have to ask him and his agent…’’
While he may have heeded the advice it does not mean he has stayed at PSV. Instead of being lured by the money of England he has decided to develop elsewhere; PSV Eindhoven’s fierce rivals Ajax Amsterdam.
Former Arsenal player Marc Overmars is currently Director of Football at Ajax and was obviously pleased with a move:
"Riechedly is seen as one of the biggest talents in the Netherlands, he has enormous potential to be a very good player and it's very good to see that this top talent - as happens a lot - does not move on to England but made a conscious choice for Ajax.
It seems the constant pressure placed on him to stay with PSV may have played a part in his decision. He is not alone in switching Eindhoven for Amsterdam. Klaas Jan Huntelaar did so early in his career to great effect. In a further kick in the teeth to Brands who stated that Bazoer should think of his development first the Dutch defensive sensation stated:
"PSV will always keep a special place in my heart. But now I have chosen for my further development."
By the scramble for his talents it is certainly a name we should keep our ears out for.
What do you make of the teenagers decision to turn down PSV and England for the illustrious youth system at Ajax?
