Manchester United legend Roy Keane stuck the boot into Liverpool's Steven Gerrard last night, saying he could not compare to former Arsenal man Patrick Vieira, now of course working at Manchester City.
The debate over who is the best Premier League midfielder of all time will no doubt go on and on, and a man labelled one of the very best had his say last night.
It was Steven Gerrard's 100th game for England, but ever the party pooper - As Ireland fans found at Euro 2012 - Roy Keane was having none of it.
During his punditry on ITV, he said Gerrard is short of being a great player, adding 'He has shown he is capable of winning games on his own ... don't think he's made the players around him much better.'
He went onto say that Patrick Vieira and Paul Scholes are both a rung above Gerrard in terms of their careers.
Well the comments didn't go unnoticed by Keane's old adversary Vieira today, who took to Twitter to savour some of the praise, Retweeting the following comments:
Well said Roy Keane, Gerrard never has,is or will be in the same class as @officialvieira— Paul Lewis (@paulsputnik) November 14, 2012
While the Frenchman will no doubt savour and point to his 1998 World Cup winners medal, and Premier League titles - there is one thing that Patrick Vieira does not have that Steven Gerrard does - a Champions League medal.
What do you think? Who is or was the better midfielder, Patrick Vieira or Steven Gerrard?
