The magnifying glass is on many Premier League defences at the moment, here are the best five defences over the last five matches from all competitions.
Stoke City – 5 Conceded
Stoke City are the most in form Premier League defence. This goes to explain the international call up for captain Ryan Shawcross and the fact he has been linked with a move back to his former club Manchester United. Stoke are one of the biggest and most physical teams in the Premier League which means they can effectively bully most attacks from having any impact on them.
Newcastle United – 6 Conceded
Newcastle United make the list despite Fabricio Coloccini picking up a recent red card. Newcastle have only conceded one goal per Premier League game since they were heavily defeated at home against Manchester United. That 3-0 defeat obviously prompted a tightening of the defensive system in the side and it’s been effective producing draws against Sunderland and Liverpool and a win over West Brom.
Norwich City – 6 Conceded
Norwich City are one of the clubs that many may not have expected to appear on this list. Norwich are yet to concede a goal in November following a home win over Stoke City and a 0-0 draw away at Reading. The Premier League defeat away to Chelsea at the start of October was the last time Norwich conceded more than one goal in a Premier League game. A reason for their consistency could be that they have managed to keep key defenders fit.
Manchester City – 7 Conceded
Another slightly surprising club to see on the list considering the flack that the City defence has endured this season. City remain the only unbeaten side in the Premier League which is in thanks to the defence. City have let in one goal this month which was against Spurs in their last game. The only conceded one goal in the league through October and only the Champions League defeat away to Ajax prevents City from appearing at the top of this list.
West Ham United – 7 Conceded
Not many would have expected West Ham to appear here but then not many would have tipped them for sixth place in the league at this point. West Ham are another team yet to concede a goal this month and they defended brilliantly during the 0-0 draw at home against Manchester City. They were a little inconsistent through October but if November ends as it’s started then expect Sam Allardyce to pick up the manager of the month award.
